GM Food... Feeding the Hungry or Population Control? OMG !

(SALEM, Ore.) - Hamsters fed genetically modified (GM) foods produce grandchildren that are unable to produce fourth generation offspring. Upon birth of the second generation they noted slower rates of growth and sexual maturity. The next generation was unable to produce[1]. These results were part of a joint experiment by Russia’s National Association for Gene Security and the Institute of Ecological and Evolutional, the  Salem-News reports today. Scientist Alexei Surov described the experiment, in which they monitored the behavior, weight gain and birthrate of several groups of hamsters. Genetically modified foods will feed the hungry. I guess that’s one way of putting it. You could also call it population control. Technically, the final result would be an end to world hunger. They didn’t lie. Who are they? Please refer to my Salem-News story “While We Were Sleeping...GM Food and the Brink of No Return”.[2] Russian scientists are not the only ones that have warned of noted health effects caused by genetically modified foods. Let us not forget that the scientists that were fired after they discovered serious health effects in animals after feeding them GM food products. Believing in the potential of GM foods, UC Berkeley's Ignacio Chapela and Arpad Pusztai, a plant genetic modification expert from Scotland Rowett Research Institute, were commissioned to conduct the first independent study on animals fed GM foods. Studies showed stunted growth, impaired immune systems, bleeding stomachs, abnormal and potentially pre-cancerous cell growth in the intestines, impaired blood cell development, misshaped cell structures in the liver, pancreas and testicles, altered gene expression and cell metabolism, liver and kidney lesions, partially atrophied livers, inflamed kidneys, less developed organs, reduced digestive enzymes, higher blood sugar, inflamed lung tissue, increased death rates and higher offspring mortality as well[3]. On Tuesday, the U.S. Supreme Court will hear its first arguments regarding genetically modified alfalfa. This decision will set precedents for future laws and regulations with regard to growing all GM foodstuff.. The world is watching as Monsanto and the U.S Government promote the growth and continued expansion of their genetic modification program. They have patented the pig, the salmon and other species and genetically engineered their genes to produce offspring with more meat. An estimated seventy-five percent of our processed foods contain some form of genetically modified (GM) ingredients. Are we willing as a nation to risk the lives of our future children and grandchildren to discover that these effects are only observed in animals? How likely is it that we will be experiencing these same effects on a personal level as we consume more genetically modified organisms against our will? I’ll say it again, are they attempting to feed the world or is it population control? I guarantee that Monsanto and the FDA can answer that. I also guarantee that we will all know the result of this experiment very soon. Here is the Voice of Russia report from Moscow: Russia has started the annual Days of Defense against Environmental Hazards from the 15th of April to the 5th of June with the announcement of sensational results of an independent work of research. Scientists have proven that Genetically Modified Organisms are harmful for mammals. The researchers discovered that animals that eat GM foodstuffs lose their ability to reproduce. Campbell hamsters that have a fast reproduction rate were fed for two years with ordinary soya beans, which are widely used in agriculture and contain different percentages of GM organisms. Another group of hamsters, the control group, was fed with pure soya, which was found with great difficulty in Serbia because 95 percent of soya in the world is transgenic. Concerning the experiment carried out jointly by the National Association for Gene Security and the Institute of Ecological and Evolutional Problems, Dr. Alexei Surov had this to say. “We selected several groups of hamsters, kept them in pairs in cells and gave them ordinary food as always,” says Alexei Surov. “We did not add anything for one group but the other was fed with soya that contained no GM components, while the third group with some content of Genetically Modified Organisms and the fourth one with increased amount of GMO. We monitored their behavior and how they gain weight and when they give birth to their cubs. Originally, everything went smoothly. However, we noticed quite a serious effect when we selected new pairs from their cubs and continued to feed them as before. These pairs’ growth rate was slower and they reached their sexual maturity more slowly. When we got some of their cubs we formed the new pairs of the third generation. We failed to get cubs from these pairs, which were fed with GM foodstuffs. It was proved that these pairs lost their ability to give birth to their cubs,” Dr. Alexei Surov said. Another surprise was discovered by scientists in hamsters of the third generation. Hair grew in the mouth of the animals that took part in the experiment. It’s unclear why this happened. The researchers cannot understand why a programme of destruction is launched when animals take GMO foodstuffs. They say that this can be neutralized only by ceasing to use these foods. Consequently, scientists suggest imposing a ban on the use of GM foods until they are tested for their bio-security. The results of Russian scientists coincide with those of their colleagues from France and Austria. For one, when scientist proved that GM maize was harmful to mammals, France immediately banned its production and sale. The scientists who carried out the experiment say that it’s too early to make far-reaching conclusions about the health hazards of GMO. They insist that there is a need to carry out comprehensive research. They suggest implementing the project, “Safety Gene Technology” at the innovation centre, “Skolkovo” which is being set up near Moscow. THE LETHAL SCIENCE OF SPLENDA, A POISONOUS CHLOROCARBON By James Bowen, M.D. The chemical sucralose, marketed as "Splenda", has replaced aspartame as the #1 artificial sweetener in foods and beverages. Aspartame has been forced out by increasing public awareness that it is both a neurotoxin and an underlying cause of chronic illness worldwide. Dr. James Bowen, Researcher and biochemist, reports: "Splenda/sucralose is simply chlorinated sugar; a chlorocarbon. Common chlorocarbons include carbon tetrachloride, trichlorethelene and methylene chloride, all deadly. Chlorine is nature's Doberman attack dog, a highly excitable, ferocious atomic element employed as a biocide in bleach, disinfectants, insecticide, WWI poison gas and hydrochloric acid. "Sucralose is a molecule of sugar chemically manipulated to surrender three hydroxyl groups (hydrogen + oxygen) and replace them with three chlorine atoms. Natural sugar is a hydrocarbon built around 12 carbon atoms. When turned into Splenda it becomes a chlorocarbon, in the family of Chlorodane, Lindane and DDT. "It is logical to ask why table salt, which also contains chlorine, is safe while Splenda/sucralose is toxic? Because salt isn't a chlorocarbon. When molecular chemistry binds sodium to chlorine to make salt carbon isn't included. Sucralose and salt are as different as oil and water. "Unlike sodium chloride, chlorocarbons are never nutritionally compatible with our metabolic processes and are wholly incompatible with normal human metabolic functioning. When chlorine is chemically reacted into carbon-structured organic compounds to make chlorocarbons, the carbon and chlorine atoms bind to each other by mutually sharing electrons in their outer shells. This arrangement adversely affects human metabolism because our mitochondrial and cellular enzyme systems are designed to completely utilize organic molecules containing carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and other compatible nutritional elements. "By this process chlorocarbons such as sucralose deliver chlorine directly into our cells through normal metabolization. This makes them effective insecticides and preservatives. Preservatives must kill anything alive to prevent bacterial decomposition." Dr. Bowen believes ingested chlorocarbon damage continues with the formation of other toxins: "Any chlorocarbons not directly excreted from the body intact can cause immense damage to the processes of human metabolism and, eventually, our internal organs. The liver is a detoxification organ which deals with ingested poisons. Chlorocarbons damage the hepatocytes, the liver's metabolic cells, and destroy them. In test animals Splenda produced swollen livers, as do all chlorocarbon poisons, and also calcified the kidneys of test animals in toxicity studies. The brain and nervous system are highly subject to metabolic toxicities and solvency damages by these chemicals. Their high solvency attacks the human nervous system and many other body systems including genetics and the immune function. Thus, chlorocarbon poisoning can cause cancer, birth defects, and immune system destruction. These are well known effects of Dioxin and PCBs which are known deadly chlorocarbons." Dr. Bowen continues: "Just like aspartame, which achieved marketplace approval by the Food and Drug Administration when animal studies clearly demonstrated its toxicity, sucralose also failed in clinical trials with animals. Aspartame created brain tumors in rats. Sucralose has been found to shrink thymus glands (the biological seat of immunity) and produce liver inflammation in rats and mice. "In the coming months we can expect to see a river of media hype expounding the virtues of Splenda/sucralose. We should not be fooled again into accepting the safety of a toxic chemical on the blessing of the FDA and saturation advertising. In terms of potential long-term human toxicity we should regard sucralose with its chemical cousin DDT, the insecticide now outlawed because of its horrendous long term toxicities at even minute trace levels in human, avian, and mammalian tissues. "Synthetic chemical sweeteners are generally unsafe for human consumption. This toxin was given the chemical name "sucralose" which is a play on the technical name of natural sugar, sucrose. One is not the other. One is food, the other is toxic; don't be deceived." Dr. Bowen also calls attention to another seldom recognized and deadly permanent effect of these chemicals: "Aspartame, sold as NutraSweet, Equal, E951, Canderel, Benevia and under other names, is a hypersensitization agent which causes Polychemical Sensitivity syndrome. Chlorocarbons strongly induce uncurable hypersensitivity diseases which are now becoming rampant." and establishing a “help line for abused children” was circulated within the Foreign Office, with a note of warning that some of the ideas were “far-fetched.” A public apology was issued to the Pope, by Britain’s ambassador to the Vatican.

The proposals, which were then circulated among key officials in Downing Street and Whitehall, also include the Pope opening an abortion ward; spending the night in a council flat in Bradford; doing forward rolls with children to promote healthy living; and even performing a duet with the Queen. In reference to the hugely sensitive issue of child abuse engulfing the Catholic Church, the Government document suggests that the Pope should take a “harder line on child abuse – announce sacking of dodgy bishops” and “launch help line for abused children.”’ [...]

* Reveal the connections between the Vatican bank and organized crime and announce that all the funds would be donated to AIDs projects globally, as penance for its "no condom" policy.

* Announce that the Vatican would be sold to Donald Trump and become his new residence.

* Announce that the Pope and all the Vatican bishops and clergy would take a vow of poverty and humility and would be moving to a monastery.

NOTE: If you have already taken this Action Item, we encourage you, and every member of your family and circle of contacts to do so again since it has been amended to reflect the passage of HR 2749 on July 30, 2009 after two failed attempts on the previous days, the "mark-up" of the Senate version, S510 in November 2009 and McCain's February 2010 gambit to extend the attack to Dietary Supplements.  If passed by the Senate, in any form, the Food Fascism Bill will guarantee the loss of clean, healthy food, high potency dietary supplements and independent farming in the US -- and the complete industrialization of the US food supply.  Now the question is what will the Senate do?

We did manage to get some protective exemptions into the House bill for small farmers who sell food directly to consumers or to restaurants, but they are, frankly, weak and will not be enough to protect your food or our farmers. But the Senate bill has much weaker protections, just mentioning minor exemptions for restaurants once and farms twice. McCain's "Dietary Supplement Safety" bill is an obvious attempt to get the stalled (sic) "food safety" show going again.

We need to rally people immediately to submit the below email message to the Senate and to visit with their Senators at home to demand accountable voting on this bill. 

 

The Obama administration is pushing new farm controls which will drive small and independent farmers off the land, literally leaving the field to Agribiz, (implementing all of Codex through complete HARMonization and allowing the FDA to declare Marshal law) through Congress as fast as possible and have coordinated the House bills so there will be no debate and committee meetings are closed. The story will not be the same in the Senate, if we can generate enough public outrage!

 

Transparency, change, undoing Bush's regulations, giving the public time to comment, grassroots anything?  None are visible in the current legislative process.  Our entire food system, and thus our health, is being given to the last people with any interest in quality or safety: Big Abgribiz.  This is going on in the absence of public scrutiny.   Those who do know what is happening, of course, have zero access to the process and to the major media.  Meanwhile, the media is absent while Congress is moving at warp speed to sew this up.

 

There will be no direct, frontal assault on organic farming and dietary supplements, but an insidious process of "infecting" organic farming and nutrient products with regulations, "traceability" requirements, required practices and prohibitions enforced by truly draconian fines and prision terms for even minor offenses running to hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars and 8 years in prison for minor offenses... all under the guise of fake "food safety." 

 

Example: imagine Joel Salatin's wonderful organic farm under the direction of the USDA, with detailed instructions on what he must feed and when, how he must medically "treat" his animals and with what, what he must "spray" and when, ... you get the picture.  These bills will industrialize all farms and insure the farmers are forced to buy chemicals and drugs.  Organic is dead.  As well as human control over the food supply.  As well as health.

 

H.R. 2749 includes a weak exemption for farmer to consumer or restaurant sales because of the Push Back we generated.  But the bill has now passed the House and it is imperative that NO version of "food safety" pass the Senate. More Push Back is needed for more protection for dietary supplements, farmers, gardeners, community farming, all local food production (including yours!) and food processing.

 

We've set up an Action Item for you to send an unmistakable message to your Senators. We must educate the Senate that you value DSHEA, organic farmers and small farming and do not - do not - want independent farmers regulated out of existence. You do not want "Big Agrabiz" regulations applied to organic and small family farms and ranches or to natural/organic food products, including Dietary Supplements.

Whereas dietary supplements, organic and natural agriculture, family farms and ranches, and natural or organic food products, including dietary supplements are not a significant part of the food safety problem, and

 

Whereas Congress previously provided for an exemption for natural food dietary supplements from the increased agency authority granted by the FDA Modernization Act of 2007, through a rule of interpretation, added as section 1011 of that Act, and has on numerous occasions exempted small and family farms from the same level of regulation as has been deemed necessary in the case of industrialized agriculture,

 

The citizens ascribing to this Petition therefore hereby request that any Food Safety Modernization Act identical or similar to HR 2749 be defeated, or that it, or any substitute for it be amended to exclude organic and natural agriculture, family farms and ranches, and natural or organic food products, including dietary supplements, through a rule of interpretation, as follows:

 

“Rule of Interpretation

 

“No provision of this act shall be deemed to apply (a) to any home, home-business, homestead, home or community gardens, small farm, organic or natural agricultural activity, (b) to any family farm or ranch, or (c) to any natural or organic food product, including dietary supplements regulated under the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994.”

 

We also note the language of the Fair Labor Standards Act, 29 USC sec 203 (s) (2) which provides, "(2) Any establishment that has as its only regular employees the owner thereof or the parent, spouse, child, or other member of the immediate family of such owner shall not be considered to be an enterprise engaged in commerce or in the production of goods for commerce or a part of such an enterprise..." Language such as this would be helpful to allay our concerns.

If the FDA Center for Food Safety is to be moved into a new Food Safety Agency, then Dietary Supplements, regulated as foods under the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA) should be included in such agency, with the proviso that such substances, as foods, are deemed safe when used as directed.
 

We oppose any bill which undermines the provisions of DSHEA and call for extending those protective provisions as has been proposed by Rep. Dr. Ron Paul of Texas. No provision of the fake "Dietary Supplement Safety Act of 2010" should be included in S510 or adopted individually; we call upon all Senators to refuse to co-sponsor Sen. McCain's bill which threatens our Health Freedom and our rights under DSHEA.

 

Furthermore, the ascribing citizens Petition the Congress of the United States to declare it the public policy of the United States that organic and natural agriculture, home and community gardens, family farms and ranches, and natural or organic food products, including dietary supplements shall be at all times free from suit, vexation, trouble, penalty, or loss of their goods, for the inestimable values they confer upon the public.

Polls say that 82% of us want a crackdown on Wall Street; yet, those of us without degrees in Economics are not sure exactly why we are so pissed off.

President Obama "gets it," he knows that his best shot at a second term is to make "Main Street vs. Wall Street" and he is adroitly painting the Republicans into corner:  If they remain loyal to their Big Money Elite patrons, they will be on the wrong side of the populist wave that wants their to hang the Wall Street Crooks and Bastard Banksters.

This is why the Republicans, like Mitch "The Bankster Bitch" McConnell

look foolish, as they try to appear to be on the side of Main Street, while working behind closed doors to plot and scheme with Wall Street to dam the rising tide of righteous anger of  We The People.

Let's try to summarize the issues and translate the jargon into Cowboy English; then, when, the seething anger of Main Street is directed at Wall Street and people go after the heads of the Heads, we will know exactly why the revolution WILL be televised.

And, as we watch TV as they stream into Wall Street offices, by the hundreds, by the thousands, and run them out of their corner offices and off their private beaches in the Hamptons, we will understand why.

When we read the news that their second and third houses, their private tennis courts, golf courses and yachts and other toys of the rich are be liquidated and the profits returned to the people on Main Street, we will know exactly why.

When you children point to the TV and say, "What are all those people doing?" you will be able to tell them what is happening and exactly why.

Shortly, we will get to the indictment, the charges of The People on Main Street against the 5% of the population who own 95% of the country.  The racist cretins who shout "socialism!"
fail to realize that they are in that 5% that are getting screwed; it is long past time for the wealth of the country to be more equitably re-distributed--taken away from the 95% and returned to the 5% who create the wealth with their honest labor.  

These leeches did not "HONOR LABOR"--the 95% of Americans who "played by the rules," went to work every day, left their children in day care centers, worked two minimum wage jobs, gave their life to the company, mowed their lawns, raised their children, cared for their elderly parents, pursued happiness; these cold-blooded reptiles laughed at the working class as they devoured their marrow.

Here is how, primarily during the 8-year coup d'etat regime of Cheney-Bush, with the assistance of too many Democrats they stole your country:

This environment was promoted through the expenditure of hundreds of millions of dollars for lobbying legislators and campaign contributions. There was extensive collusion between the financial services industry and politicians of both parties.

Cutbacks in government monitoring of financial practices became the norm, with fines and "settlements" in (with some exceptions) replacing vigilant oversight and the prosecution of wrongdoers at the federal and state level. Fraudsters were primarily punished with fines businesses paid as a cost of doing business."

In 2004, the FBI warned of an epidemic of mortgage fraud, but also acknowledged their own white-collar crime squads had been downsized when fighting "the war on terror" became the priority.

As conservatives dominated politics, laws were softened and courts soon looked the other way as a historically unprecedented transfer of wealth got underway. What were once considered criminal practices were now redefined as legitimate ways of doing business. Observers like Denis Arvay commented in The Atlantic:

"This was criminal in any serious definition of criminality, but all perfectly legal in the lawyer-crafted vermin-nourishment clauses under which our economy was looted.

Everyone involved knew that the CDOs that packaged sub prime loans were not AAA credit-worthy (which means that they are completely risk-free). "The entire strategy is to keep people from getting the facts."

Expect the 41 Senators who signed a letter of support for Israel and FOX News and AIPAC and other operatives to begin to whip up the American public into a frenzy of fear about Iran.

Let's hope that the lies and jingoistic media hype that dragged this country into an un-necessary war with Iraq,                                                   RUSH TO WAR

where we squandered "blood and treasure" with no connection to the "vital interests of the United States," will be rejected by the American public.

 

Q:  From all the marrow and money expended in Iraq, "Qui Bono?"

      "Who benefits?" 

 

A:  Israel, and The Masters of War--the defense contractors.

 

Will a war with Iran repeat the same scenario? 

 

Will the corporate media stoke the fear of Americans with lies, exaggerations and plain bullshit?

 

Will the "Israeli Forty-One" Senate block feed the frenzy for the U. S. to come to the aid of an ally?  (Although there is no defense treaty.)

 

Will America be duped again with Israel saying:  "Let's YOU and Iran have a war!  We will hold your coat! Go get 'em!"

 

The jingoist war-mongers at FOX news will not tell you that Iran is not Iraq; the difference between the military might of Iraq and Iran is like comparing "syllable to sound." (Emily Dickinson)

 

After the first blow is struck, the toothpaste will be out of the tube, the genie will be out of the bottle and here is what will likely occur:

 

* Israel attacks Iranian nuclear sites; planes will drop "bunker buster" bombs that it purchased from the U. S. 

Make no mistake; these "mini-nukes" are hundreds of times more powerful than the bombs dropped on Japan in WW II.  The term "mini" conjures up a sense of small, but there is no small when the bomb is NUCLEAR.

Because it will have limited access by air, Israel will also launch missiles from submarines in the Arabian Gulf and land-based missiles from Israel.

  * In a "best case" for Israel, all of the Iranian nuclear materials are destroyed.  In a "worst case" for Israel, they make a huge miscalculation and their bombing releases a cloud of nuclear radiation that circulates around the planet, several times.  This would poison land, water, and air in many countries for decades.  

The prevailing wind patterns will dose Eastern Europe, Russia, India, China and Japan.  How will these countries react to such a disaster?  The Death Cloud would then pass over Hawaii and shortly arrive on the West Coast of the United States; then follow the prevailing jet stream across the entire country.  How will the U. S. react?

 

Finally, it will hit Europe.  How with the European countries react?

 

The Death Cloud will continue to circle the planet for many weeks, or months, assuring a thorough dousing of deadly radiation.

 

Is this want the Predictive Linguistics Project (Clif High, halfpasthuman.com) finds in language such as "Israel," "mistake" that puts a time frame in the next few months?  Is this what the Biblical scholars point to as a time when "all the countries of the earth will turn against Israel"?

 

* But, assuming there is no Death Cloud, Iran and all the other enemies of Israel in the Middle East will attack Tel Aviv first with missiles and then begin a land invasion.

 

* With her back against the wall, Israel will deploy her 200+ nuclear weapons; enough firepower to contaminate the entire Middle East (and all the oil) for hundreds of years.  Also, the release of that many nuclear weapons will create a Death Cloud and destroy the planet's eco systems.

 

The U. S. has gone into wars based on lies before:

 

* "Remember the Maine" lie that started the Spanish-American War.

 

* The fabricated "Gulf of Tonkin" attack that led to the Vietnam War.

 

* The WMDs and Iraqi drones and kites that would strike the U. S. "within 45 minutes" (Tony "Baloney" Blair).
President Obama must be steadfast in his determination to settle the Iran situation with diplomacy and patience, because, once the first shot is fired in this next war, the result could be the destruction of the planet; the real "War to end all wars."

 

We recommend that, before that first shot is fired by Israel, President Obama should state, unequivocally, that the United States will remain neutral in any conflict between Israel and Iran.  He must resist the cries of the "Israeli Forty-One" in Congress to entangle the United States in any war with Iran.  If the Congress does pass a resolution of war, he cannot veto it, but, as Commander in Chief, he can decide where, when, and how U. S. troops are deployed.

 

There is one simple reason to stay out of any Israeli-Iran war:  we are out of blood and treasure:  our military resources are threadbare and exhausted from the current wars; we are in deep debt as a nation, 

because Bush and Cheney funded their wars off the budget books through a series of "Emergency, Supplemental" allocations.

 

Listen:  this next war could destroy the United States and the global eco-system.  We cannot let the blood feud between a nuclear-armed Israel and her neighboring countries in the Middle East decide the fate of the entire planet.  The planet and all life on it are not Israel's to bet in this game of Armageddon Russian roulette.

Statement of Congressman Ron Paul - United States House of Representatives Statement on Motion to Instruct Conferees on HR 2194, Comprehensive Iran Sanctions, Accountability and Divestment Act - April 22, 2010

April 23, 2010 "United States House of Representatives" -- Mr. Speaker I rise in opposition to this motion to instruct House conferees on HR 2194, the Comprehensive Iran Sanctions, Accountability and Divestment Act, and I rise in strong opposition again to the underlying bill and to its Senate version as well. I object to this entire push for war on Iran, however it is disguised. Listening to the debate on the Floor on this motion and the underlying bill it feels as if we are back in 2002 all over again: the same falsehoods and distortions used to push the United States into a disastrous and unnecessary one trillion dollar war on Iraq are being trotted out again to lead us to what will likely be an even more disastrous and costly war on Iran. The parallels are astonishing.

We hear war advocates today on the Floor scare-mongering about reports that in one year Iran will have missiles that can hit the United States. Where have we heard this bombast before? Anyone remember the claims that Iraqi drones were going to fly over the United States and attack us? These “drones” ended up being pure propaganda – the UN chief weapons inspector concluded in 2004 that there was no evidence that Saddam Hussein had ever developed unpiloted drones for use on enemy targets. Of course by then the propagandists had gotten their war so the truth did not matter much.

We hear war advocates on the floor today arguing that we cannot afford to sit around and wait for Iran to detonate a nuclear weapon. Where have we heard this before? Anyone remember then-Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice’s oft-repeated quip about Iraq: that we cannot wait for the smoking gun to appear as a mushroom cloud.

We need to see all this for what it is: Propaganda to speed us to war against Iran for the benefit of special interests.

Let us remember a few important things. Iran, a signatory of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, has never been found in violation of that treaty. Iran is not capable of enriching uranium to the necessary level to manufacture nuclear weapons. According to the entire US Intelligence Community, Iran is not currently working on a nuclear weapons program. These are facts, and to point them out does not make one a supporter or fan of the Iranian regime. Those pushing war on Iran will ignore or distort these facts to serve their agenda, though, so it is important and necessary to point them out.

Some of my well-intentioned colleagues may be tempted to vote for sanctions on Iran because they view this as a way to avoid war on Iran. I will ask them whether the sanctions on Iraq satisfied those pushing for war at that time. Or whether the application of ever-stronger sanctions in fact helped war advocates make their case for war on Iraq: as each round of new sanctions failed to “work” – to change the regime – war became the only remaining regime-change option.

This legislation, whether the House or Senate version, will lead us to war on Iran. The sanctions in this bill, and the blockade of Iran necessary to fully enforce them, are in themselves acts of war according to international law. A vote for sanctions on Iran is a vote for war against Iran. I urge my colleagues in the strongest terms to turn back from this unnecessary and counterproductive march to war.

 

MURDER: Well Point systematically dropped breast cancer patients from coverage

Health Care for America Now essentially charged WellPoint with murder today, protesting that the company systematically dropped breast cancer patients from the rolls, 

HCAN spokesman Avram Goldstein released this statement, intimating that criminal prosecutions should be pursued in this case:

“WellPoint is committing murder by spreadsheet, and it has to stop now.

This is a matter of life and death, and the executives and board members of WellPoint need to be held to account to the fullest extent of the law.

WellPoint’s Blue Cross-Blue Shield companies’ disregard for human life to maximize profits is immoral and outrageous. The Reuters report shows an unconscionable pattern of denying needed health care to line the pockets of wealthy executives and shareholders.

Today’s disclosure provides more evidence of why Congress needed to pass national health reform in the first place, and it also shows why we need to curb the extraordinary influence of insurance companies so they don’t interfere with enforcement of the new law. We need the forthcoming federal regulations to shine a light on the insurance companies and hold them accountable for their bad practices.”

Actually, what we needed is for groups like HCAN to ensure during the debate that practices like this would truly get outlawed by the Affordable Care Act.

In actuality, insurance companies, led by WellPoint, lobbied for changes to the restrictions on their business and a de-fanging of the law. Much like in the current financial reform debate, they ended up leaving a lot of the regulatory authority open-ended and at the discretion of regulators, in this case the Health and Human Services Secretary and the National Association of Insurance Commissioners. Jon Walker laid out how WellPoint successfully removed independent third-party review of all rescission cases.

Reuters reports that WellPoint is under federal investigation for singling out breast cancer patients and dropping their coverage “based on either erroneous or flimsy information.” They also report that language in the House bill would have protected these women, but it was removed in the Senate version of the bill because “lobbyists for WellPoint and other top insurance companies successfully fought proposed provisions of the legislation.”

Max Baucus, head of the Senate Finance Committee, credits former WellPoint VP Liz Fowler with writing the “blueuprint” of the bill, and her name appears as “author” on the bill PDF released by the committee [...]

As you can see, the Senate bill does not mandate either independent third party review or the continuation of coverage while the review is taking place. Theoretically it’s possible for the Secretary of HHS to require a similar independent third party review framework for rescission, but unlike the House bill, the Senate bill which ultimately passed does not require her to do so — something WellPoint actively lobbied for.

The White House might argue that rescission is a thing of the past because the law guarantees issue of health insurance, and with risk adjustment insurers will have an incentive to even pick up sick patients. However, in reality the risk adjustment mechanism is far smaller than the liability of sick patients, and insurers will undoubtedly work hard to avoid as many patients with pre-existing conditions as possible.

We now have a whodunit, where we have to ask who in the Senate pushed to eliminate the toughest regulatory restrictions from insurance companies who obviously have no compunction against systematically denying coverage to breast cancer patients.

Obviously Liz Fowler, the former WellPoint VP, is a good place to start. So far, nobody privy to those discussions has been willing to say on the record that Fowler is culpable. But the insurance industry, already hated in the country, has now committed what even cautious groups like HCAN call murder. Covering for the culprit here is tantamount to being an accessory to the crime.
