The following are 19 facts about the deindustrialization of America that will blow your mind....

#1 The United States has lost approximately 42,400 factories since 2001.  About 75 percent of those factories employed over 500 people when they were still in operation.

#2 Dell Inc., one of America’s largest manufacturers of computers, has announced plans to dramatically expand its operations in China with an investment of over $100 billion over the next decade.

#3 Dell has announced that it will be closing its last large U.S. manufacturing facility in Winston-Salem, North Carolina in November.  Approximately 900 jobs will be lost.

#4 In 2008, 1.2 billion cellphones were sold worldwide.  So how many of them were manufactured inside the United States?  Zero.

#5 According to a new study conducted by the Economic Policy Institute, if the U.S. trade deficit with China continues to increase at its current rate, the U.S. economy will lose over half a million jobs this year alone.

#6 As of the end of July, the U.S. trade deficit with China had risen 18 percent compared to the same time period a year ago.

#7 The United States has lost a total of about 5.5 million manufacturing jobs since October 2000.

#8 According to Tax Notes, between 1999 and 2008 employment at the foreign affiliates of U.S. parent companies increased an astounding 30 percent to 10.1 million. During that exact same time period, U.S. employment at American multinational corporations declined 8 percent to 21.1 million.

#9 In 1959, manufacturing represented 28 percent of U.S. economic output.  In 2008, it represented 11.5 percent.

#10 Ford Motor Company recently announced the closure of a factory that produces the Ford Ranger in St. Paul, Minnesota. Approximately 750 good paying middle class jobs are going to be lost because making Ford Rangers in Minnesota does not fit in with Ford's new "global" manufacturing strategy.

#11 As of the end of 2009, less than 12 million Americans worked in manufacturing.  The last time less than 12 million Americans were employed in manufacturing was in 1941.

#12 In the United States today, consumption accounts for 70 percent of GDP. Of this 70 percent, over half is spent on services.

The United States is rapidly becoming the very first "post-industrial" nation on the globe.  All great economic empires eventually become fat and lazy and squander the great wealth that their forefathers have left them, but the pace at which America is accomplishing this is absolutely amazing.  It was America that was at the forefront of the industrial revolution.  It was America that showed the world how to mass produce everything from automobiles to televisions to airplanes.  It was the great American manufacturing base that crushed Germany and Japan in World War II.  But now we are witnessing the deindustrialization of America.  Tens of thousands of factories have left the United States in the past decade alone.  Millions upon millions of manufacturing jobs have been lost in the same time period.  The United States has become a nation that consumes everything in sight and yet produces increasingly little.  Do you know what our biggest export is today?  Waste paper.  Yes, trash is the number one thing that we ship out to the rest of the world as we voraciously blow our money on whatever the rest of the world wants to sell to us.  The United States has become bloated and spoiled and our economy is now  just a shadow of what it once was.  Once upon a time America could literally outproduce the rest of the world combined.  Today that is no longer true, but Americans sure do consume more than anyone else in the world.  If the deindustrialization of America continues at this current pace, what possible kind of a future are we going to be leaving to our children?

Any great nation throughout history has been great at making things.  So if the United States continues to allow its manufacturing base to erode at a staggering pace how in the world can the U.S. continue to consider itself to be a great nation?  We have created the biggest debt bubble in the history of the world in an effort to maintain a very high standard of living, but the current state of affairs is not anywhere close to sustainable.  Every single month America does into more debt and every single month America gets poorer.

So what happens when the debt bubble pops? 

So how many tens of thousands more factories do we need to lose before we do something about it?

How many millions more Americans are going to become unemployed before we all admit that we have a very, very serious problem on our hands?

How many more trillions of dollars are going to leave the country before we realize that we are losing wealth at a pace that is killing our economy?

How many once great manufacturing cities are going to become rotting war zones like Detroit before we understand that we are committing national economic suicide?

The deindustrialization of America is a national crisis.  It needs to be treated like one.

Israeli soldiers committed "summary executions" on Gaza-bound flotilla - UN Report

UN experts have determined that the Israeli raid on a so-called peace flotilla was overly violent and totally illegal. The Human Rights Council has said Israel's military response to the Gaza aid sail was "disproportionate and brutal," violating international law. The special UN panel said there was now clear evidence to support prosecutions against Israel for wilful killing and torture. In its scathing report, the panel rejected an argument by Israel that activists on the aid ship had turned violent, thereby justifying the actions of Israeli soldiers when they opened fire. The UN Human Rights Council panel said Israel's military had used unnecessary violence to commit grave violations of human rights law and international humanitarian law. It said that the Israeli shootings were "consistent with summary execution." A 56-page document released by the UN says that Israel's naval blockade of the Palestinian territory was also unlawful because of the humanitarian crisis there. The report said: "The conduct of the Israeli military and other personnel towards the flotilla passengers was not only disproportionate to the occasion but demonstrated levels of totally unnecessary and incredible violence. A series of violations of international law were committed by the Israeli forces during the interception of the flotilla and during the detention of passengers in Israel prior to deportation." The panel concluded that a humanitarian crisis existed in Gaza on the day of the incident, making the Israeli blockade unlawful. The Israeli Foreign Ministry has responded by saying the Human Rights Council had a "biased, politicized and extremist approach." Israel did not cooperate with the panel and is awaiting a report from a separate UN group under New Zealand's former Prime Minister Geoffrey Palmer and Colombia's former President Alvaro Uribe, who are yet to report their findings. Israel soldiers shot and killed eight Turkish activists and one Turkish-American aboard the Mavi Marmara on May 31 as it was sailing toward Gaza.

The world's banks are bankrupt and the G-8 leaders will be told "officially" at their summit in November, when the BASEL III World Accountants Group shows them the proof.

Of course the world leaders have known that their banks are insolvent and, once they are told that they have until 2017 to balance the books, they will instruct their MSM lapdogs to not let the peasants find out to avoid a mass panic or, worse, a revolution.

The BASEL III bean counters are charged with creating accounting rules that the whole world (yes, that includes the U.S.) has agreed to obey, but they know that, if they put the new rules into effect this year, none of the world's banks would survive.

...it is a no brainer to conclude that the banking crisis (if we are lucky) may be “resolved” by 2015 but it is most likely that it can be only resolved by 2017/2018 .

This is an express admission that all banks would require such a long transition period to comply with the new requirements! 

The stark reality is that the Too Big To Fail Banks do not have the ability and or the means to raise capital at this critical juncture."

In plain "Cowboy English:"  the banks of the world are in the red and the slightest jolt or public panic, could cause a global financial meltdown.  The BASEL group has concluded that the world's banks need 5-7 years, or so, to get their act together.

But, there are scant signs that the Bansksters are ready to close down the Ponzi Casino, until they have drained the investors, shareholders, home owners, and Main Street depositors of every thing of any value; before the "little people" catch on an start to fight back.

The BASAL accountants know that the odds the world's banks flushing out trillions of dollars of toxic debt in 5-7 years is as likely as the junkie in the alley going cold turkey.  But allowing that suspension of logic is preferable to telling the stark truth and sending the world into a panic and a global depresson, NOW. 

Those who know the truth, that the world is inexorably headed for a global meltdown, will try to "keep a lid on it," until they can store food, seeds, weapons, and build underground living spaces to wait out the starvation of the rest of the human race.

Vatican Bank Under Investigation again for Money Laundering

The current investigation into alleged money

laundering by the Roman Catholic Church reminds

the world that the Vatican Bank has been down the

road to perdition before.

Sources behind the walls say that the Vatican is

forced to launder money for the Mafia, under the

threat that Italy's organized crime group will expose

the proof--documents and photos--it has of

priests molesting children.

In the early 1980s, when the Vatican bank was implicated in the collapse of what was then Italy’s largest private bank, Banco Ambrosiano.

Its head, Roberto Calvi, whose close links with the Holy See

earned him the nickname “God’s Banker,” was found hanging

beneath a bridge over the River Thames in London in 1982.

It has never been established whether he was killed or committed

suicide, although there have been suspicions that he may have

been murdered by the Mafia after losing large amounts of mob

money.

An American archbishop, Paul Marcinkus, who headed the Vatican

bank at the time, was charged as an accessory to fraudulent

bankruptcy following the disappearance of $1.3 billion in loans to

institutions in South America.

As a Vatican employee, he claimed immunity from prosecution by

Italian authorities. A warrant for his arrest was eventually

canceled, and he protested his innocence until he died four years

ago in Arizona.

The head of the Vatican’s bank said he had been “humiliated” by the announcement of an investigation into alleged money laundering as the Roman Catholic Church received another blow to its battered reputation.

The investigation demonstrates a more muscular attitude toward the Vatican's finances on the part of the Bank of Italy, which has instituted new regulations on banking transparency, experts say.

Italian authorities froze 23 million euros ($30 million) belonging to the bank, officially known as the Institute for Religious Works, and placed its president, Ettore Gotti Tedeschi, and chief executive, Paolo Cipriani, under investigation for alleged breaches of money laundering laws.

The unprecedented move could hardly come at a worse time for the Vatican. For months, it has been the target of scathing criticism for failing to deal with clerical sex abuse cases around the world.

Pope Benedict XVI’s historic four-day trip to England and Scotland last week, which drew large crowds and was widely regarded as an unexpected triumph, had begun to repair some of the damage. But within a day of his return to Rome, Italian authorities announced the probe into suspicious transactions at the Vatican bank.

Italy's Guardia di Finanza police have also been investigating allegations that the Vatican bank has been involved in money laundering for at least a year.

In December, a respected Italian news magazine, Panorama, reported that officials were probing the bank for suspected money laundering via one or more accounts held at a branch of Italy's largest bank, Unicredit.

Prosecutors have not explained whether that investigation is linked to the one announced Tuesday.

In the latest case of alleged wrongdoing, Italian finance police froze the 23 million euros, which the Vatican bank had transferred to a small private bank, Credito Artigiano.

The bulk of the money, 20 million euros, was destined for a Vatican account held by JP Morgan in Frankfurt, with the rest going to a Vatican account operated by an Italian bank, Banca del Fucino.

Mr. Gotti Tedeschi, who was appointed last year, was placed under investigation for allegedly failing to communicate to financial authorities where the money originated, in breach of strict rules designed to prevent money laundering and terrorist financing. Neither man was arrested or charged with any offense.

But the Vatican’s embarrassment was made all the more acute by the fact that Gotti Tedeschi has frequently spoken out on the need for more morality in financing, echoing appeals made by Pope Benedict in various encyclicals.

He is also a close adviser to Italy’s finance minister and serves on the board of several large Italian banks.

"Since I became president of the Vatican bank, together with Paolo Cipriani I have spent my entire time resolving the problems which I am now being investigated over," Gotti Tedeschi told an Italian news agency, Adnkronos.

"I feel deeply humiliated over what is happening. I have nothing more to add," he said.

In a statement, the Vatican expressed “the utmost confidence” in both senior executives and said it was “surprised” by the investigation. "The Holy See is perplexed and surprised by the initiatives of the Rome prosecutors, considering the data necessary is already available at the Bank of Italy, and similar transactions commonly take place with other Italian banks."

The mayor of Rome also threw his support behind Gotti Tedeschi. “I would like to express my solidarity with the president of the bank. I hope that this affair, which has left me rather perplexed, can be cleared up as soon as possible,” said Gianni Alemanno.

The Institute for Religious Works is a bank unlike any other in the world. Its cash machines in the Vatican City State have the unique distinction of allowing account holders to conduct transactions in Latin.

It manages Vatican finances as well as the accounts of Catholic organizations and religious orders, and the pensions of the city-state’s thousands of employees. It has no shareholders and is not open to outsiders.

A commission of Catholic cardinals oversees it, but professional bankers under the direction of Gotti Tedeschi conduct day-to-day business.

 

Hunt Deathbed Confession names JFK Co-conspirators: LBJ, Nixon, others

The co-conspirators in the  JFK assassination were named in a deathbed confession by E. Howard Hunt, former CIA and Watergate operative; the names include JFK's VP Lyndon Johnson, Richard  Nixon and Mafia dons Santos Trafficante and Sam Giancana.

Hunt's testimony essentially corroborated the story told by Oliver Stone's film, "JFK" and the book Legacy of Secrecy (Waldron and Hartmann).

An issue of Rolling Stone (4/2007) features the deathbed confession of CIA operative and key Bay of Pigs/Watergate/Nixon administration figure E. Howard Hunt, The Last Confession of E. Howard Hunt by Erik Hedegaard. This piece is significant not only for its exploration of Hunt, but for breakthrough information that appears to thoroughly corroborate the work of key John F. Kennedy assassination researchers and historians.   Who killed JFK?   According to Hunt's confession, which was taken by his son, St. John ("Saint") Hunt, over the course of many personal and carefully planned father-son meetings, the following individuals were among the key participants:   Lyndon B. Johnson: LBJ, whose own career was assisted by JFK nemesis J. Edgar Hoover (FBI), gave the orders to a CIA-led hit team, and helped guide the Warren Commission/lone gunman cover-up.   Cord Meyer: CIA agent, architect of the Operation Mockingbird disinformation apparatus, and husband of Mary Meyer (who had an affair with JFK).   David Atlee Philips: CIA and Bay of Pigs veteran. Recruited William Harvey (CIA) and Cuban exile militant Antonio Veciana.   William Harvey: CIA and Bay of Pigs veteran. Morales was also a figure involved with the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy.   Lucien Sarti: Corsican assassin and drug trafficker, possible "French gunman," Grassy Knoll (second) shooter.   Would Hunt continue to tell lies on his deathbed? Perhaps. Would Hunt tell a final tall story or two, to protect himself, or perhaps deal one final slap in the face to the US government (which made him a fall guy for Watergate)? Yes. Would Hunt hide the involvement of certain individuals to whom he remained loyal, including people who are still alive? Certainly. Anything from an operative like Hunt can only be accepted with caution and healthy skepticism.   Nevertheless, Hunt's scenario has the ring of truth.   Each of the named names are well-known CIA and CIA-linked players exposed by many researchers and historians who have detailed the enduring connection from the Bay of Pigs and the Dallas hit to Watergate and Iran-Contra.   The Hunt confession vindicates generations of historians, researchers and whistleblowers who have given their lives and careers to expose the truth about Dealey Plaza. While there are too many to name, they include, but are not limited to (and in no particular order): Jim Garrison, Mark Lane, Fletcher Prouty, Josiah Thompson, Carl Oglesby, Peter Dale Scott, Anthony Summers, Robert Groden, Victor Marchetti, David Lifton, Harrison Livingstone, Michael Canfield, A.J. Weberman, Sylvia Meagher, William Turner, Jim Marrs, Pete Brewton, John Newman, Philip Melanson, Hal Verb, Mae Brussell, Harold Weisberg, Oliver Stone, Mike Ruppert and Dan Hopsicker, Jim diEugenio and Linda Pease.   Meanwhile, the criminal deceptions of the US government and its corporate media, the Warren Commission, and the dirty work of cover-up specialists such as Gerald Posner and Mark Fuhrman, and the legions of JFK assassination revisionist/theorists, deserve a final rebuke, and eternal scorn.   Highlighting Hunt's role   Although the Rolling Stone piece does not address it, the Hunt confession directly corroborates two classic investigations that previously exposed the role of Hunt. They are Mark Lane's Plausible Denial and Michael Canfield/A.J. Weberman's Coup D'Etat in America. Lane's book details how he took Hunt to court, and won a libel suit, essentially proving that the CIA murdered JFK, and that Hunt lied about his whereabouts. The investigation of Canfield and Weberman identified Hunt and Frank Sturgis as two of the three "tramps" arrested at Dealey Plaza.   Time has only made these investigations more relevant. More than ever, their books, and those of the JFK historians and researchers above listed, deserve to be found, read and studied.   Hunt to Nixon to Bush   The Rolling Stone piece fails to go after the roles of Richard Nixon and George Herbert Walker Bush. But the Hunt confession, if accurate, leads directly to them, to their lifelong associates, and all the way to the present George W. Bush administration.   The Dallas-Watergate-Iran-Contra connection has been thoroughly documented by the key JFK researchers, and in particular, in the work of Peter Dale Scott, one of the very first to show the deep political continuity across three decades. Daniel Hopsicker's Barry and the Boys goes into even more detail on the players.   Consider the career of George H.W. Bush. He was a Texas oilman (Zapata Oil) and a CIA operative, involved with the Bay of Pigs. Bush's name was found in the papers of George DeMohrenschildt, one of Lee Harvey Oswald's CIA handlers. As documented by Pete Brewton, author of The Mafia, the CIA and George Bush, Bush was deeply connected with a small circle of Texas elites tied to the CIA and the Mafia, as well as the Florida-based CIA/anti-Casto Cuban exile/ Mafia milieu As Richard Nixon's hand-picked Republican National Committee chairman, and later as CIA director, Bush constantly covered-up and stonewalled for his boss about Watergate, which itself (by the admission of Frank Sturgis and others) was a cover-up of the JFK assassination.   Tracking any of the individual CIA operatives involved with the Bay of Pigs, it is impossible to ignore or deny direct connections to George H.W. Bush and his crime family, across the Kennedy assassinations, covert operations in Indochina and, later, Latin America.   Beyond any reasonable doubt, the US government murdered John F. Kennedy. There are people still alive today who were involved directly and indirectly implicated. Some are probably even serving in positions of high influence. Howard Hunt's taped deathbed "confession" is not new news. In the days after Hunt died there were several articles covering the same material. Hunt is a profound liar of the highest rank. He planted forged memos in the National Archives blaming JFK for the Diem assassination, for example. The lies he told on the stand, under oath, in his slander trail (described by Mark Lane) are monuments to filth-as-truth. I consider his "confession" as perhaps the strongest evidence that Johnson was not involved in JFK's murder (though it seems, given his connections, that he may have been aware of the threat in general terms - but so were the FBI and Secret Service, in specific terms). Hunt gives us Sturgis and some other credible information merely as bait for that poisonous hook that Johnson was to blame. Given that, and the content of his "confession", I think Hunt should be seriously considered a likely candidate as one of the two grassy knoll gunmen: the one who delivered the final, fail-safe head shot, at the last possible moment, when it became clear that the mafia and Cuban gunmen in the rear, and also on the knoll, had failed. (James Files' description of events on the knoll clearly indicate that if he was actually there, as he claims, that he fired the throat shot, with stunning incompetence. This evidence is collected in my DVD, JFK II, but it comes from well known and original sources like Mark Lane's Plausible Denial, and Webster Tarpley's Unauthorized Biography of George Bush (and from Hunt's own mouth). I don't get this at all. The Hoover memo, ignored? The memo naming George Bush as a CIA agent, and simultaneously and explicitly connecting him to both the assassination, and to the "misguided anti-Castro groups" of which Hunt was the well-known supervisor, ignored? . Instead the article offers us photographs claiming to be of Bush in front of the Depository. They are not at all persuasive, to my eyes. They don't look much like Bush, and certainly they could be thousands of other tall, thin, balding men. The article also raises the lame allegation that Hunt was one of the bums arrested in the train yard and photographed as they were led to the police station. There are much better pictures showing very clearly that it was Chauncey Holt, not Hunt, who was the bum in question. . I am embarrassed that Alex Jones, who does such essential work, and to whom I am very grateful, and to whom I always refer people, would post such stuff. The stealing of Kennedy's body, the control of the autopsy, and the monumental cover-up in the papers were NONE OF THEM Texas operations. The Secret Service standown was not a Texas operation. The CIA serves the Rockefellers, not Texas Oil. Period. As do the Bushes. This was a northeastern elite operation, not a Texas operation. Overwhelming evidence shows that. But if you perpetrate a crime as large as JFK's murder, you have to have a fall guy. Oswald is the fall guy for the inattentive and uninitiated. Johnson is the fall guy for the more sophisticated and experienced. . Bush and the CIA killed Kennedy for the Rockefellers. And they had done considerable work setting Oswald up to appear as a Castro operative. Oswalds staged attempts to appear to be a member of the Fair Play for Cuba Committee are well known. Less well known is that Dulles and the rest had the lists drawn up for the massive round-up of all members of the Fair Play for Cuba Committee, a real organization with numerous, serious and honest members who wanted to stop CIA sponsored terrorism against Cuba. Johnson was presented with the following dilemma by the Rockefeller clique: "if you don't tell the world that Oswald acted alone, we'll show that he was killed by Castro's agents, we'll use our control of the media to demand an invasion, and we'll have war with the Soviets in no time." Certainly that was the argument made by Johnson to Earl Warren (i.e. that the Rockefellers were planning to provoke World War III if Oswald was not depicted as acting alone). . The icing on the cake is HR Haldeman's book, I think it's the Haldeman Diaries but it might be Ends of Power*. He describes how Nixon called Johnson during Watergate and told him, "call off your dogs, or I'll tell about how you tapped my phone in '68 during the election." Johnson replied, "If you tell that, I'll tell...." The end of that sentence was the only part of all of Haldeman's books that was censored on the basis of "national security." Of course he was talking about the Kennedy assassination. No other answer will serve. 10 days later Johnson was dead. But how could Johnson threaten to tell about Nixon's involvement if HE, Johnson, were involved? . Much more important than Hunt's calculated attempts to poison the historical well from the grave are recent revelations that all members of the House Assassinations Committee expressed an interest to pursue the anti-Castro Cuban connection. Why? The answer is found in the heart of Lane's Plausible Denial. The Committee came into possession of a memo between Richard Helms, head of CIA, and Jesus Angleton, his #2, discussing what course to follow when the Committee learned of Hunt's presence in Dallas, and his involvement in the assassination. The Committee, in closed session, doubtless saw far more evidence than just this memo, showing the connection of the anti-Castro CIA terrorists, of whom Hunt was a front-line supervisor, and the Kennedy assassination. They also heard testimony from Marita Lorenz, for example. But Colby, the CIA chief who doubtless provided the memo, was fired for being too-cooperative, and was replaced by George HW Bush. The Committee's investigation was shut down abruptly. But some member of the staff leaked the memo to the press, with the predictable result that only two small papers had the guts to publish it. Group to call on U.S. Government to reveal the facts

Lawmakers from the Liberal Democratic Party want to see the letter K -- a symbol for a bribe-taker -- permanently etched on wrongdoers' skin.

Party deputies Sergei Ivanov and Igor Lebedev suggested the severe measure in a new law-and-order bill due to go before Russia's parliament, the State Duma.

They say the markings would heap shame on corrupt officials and alert Russian employers so they could refuse them jobs.

"The authors of the bill believe that branding bribe-takers with indestructible marks in a visible place to show that they have committed a crime will enable employers to refuse them employment," the centrist party, which holds 40 of 450 seats in the Duma, said in a statement.

After coming to office in 2008, President Dmitry Medvedev declared corruption the number one threat to Russian society and introduced a raft of laws to combat the menace.

However, neither the government nor the Supreme Court are likely to support the branding initiative, the state-owned news agency said.

Germany-based corruption watchdog, Transparency International, lists Russia as one of the most corrupt nations in the world.

What is a solar flare?

A solar flare is a large explosion of magnetic energy in the Sun’s atmosphere which causes an intense burst of increased brightness. They cannot be detected by the naked eye from the surface of the earth but can be observed through telescopes, space x-rays and thermal imaging equipment.

The amount of energy released by a flare can be equivalent to millions of 100-megaton hydrogen bombs exploding at the same time – ten million times greater than that released by a volcanic eruption.

Often lasting just a few minutes, solar flares heat material to many millions of degrees and produce a burst of radiation across the electromagnetic spectrum, including from radio waves to x-rays and gamma rays.

When, why and where do they occur?

A flare occurs when magnetic energy that has built up in the solar atmosphere is suddenly released - mostly in the active regions around sunspots. Their frequency varies from several a day, when the sun is particularly active, to less than one a week during quiet periods.

Large flares are less frequent than smaller ones. Solar activity varies within an 11-year cycle at the peak of which there are typically more sunspots and therefore more solar flares.

What affect can they have on earth?

X-rays and UV radiation emitted by solar flares can cause long-lasting radiation storms the Earth’s ionosphere – the uppermost part of the planet’s atmosphere – and trigger radio black-outs around the world.

Each flare produces streams of highly energetic particles in the solar wind and the Earth's magnetosphere that can present radiation hazards to spacecraft and astronauts. A solar flare on January 20, 2005 released the highest concentration of protons ever directly measured and took just 15 minutes to reach Earth, indicating a velocity of approximately one-third light speed.

Scientists have warned that a really big solar eruption could destroy satellites and wreck power and communications grids around the globe.

Nasa recently said that Britain could face widespread power blackouts and be left without critical communication signals for long periods of time if the earth is hit by a once-in-a-generation “space storm”.

How do we know they are coming?

The methods currently used to predict flares are problematic and it is not presently possible to tell when an active region of the Sun will produce a flare.

But certain properties of sunspots and active regions of the Sun correlate with flaring. Magnetically complex regions called delta spots produce most of the largest flares, so a simple scheme of sunspot classification is commonly used as a starting point for predicting flares. Predictions are usually stated in terms of the probability of a flare within 24 or 48 hours. The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration issues forecasts of this kind.

A number of space missions have been deployed to observe flares, including Hinode - a new spacecraft launched by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency in 2006 to observe the phenomena in closer detail.

When were they discovered?

The first flare ever to be observed was also the most powerful on record. It occurred in 1859 and was reportd independently by the British astronomers Richard Carrington and Roger Hodgeson. The scientists observed the flare as the localised brightening of small areas within a group of sunspots. The event left a trace in Greenland ice in the form of nitrates and beryllium-10, which allow its strength to be measured today.
